A skill for life
Whether you are new to mindfulness, rediscovering your connection with it or a regular practitioner, we welcome you to our 8 week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Groups. First developed by Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts medical school, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Groups have been found to have a wide range of benefits including helping with stress, anxiety and managing difficulties associated with chronic health and pain conditions. The evidence base for the benefits of MBSR and other mindfulness based approaches has grown extensively in recent years. It is now used widely in healthcare, workplace and education settings with a range of health and mental health conditions but also for supporting general well-being and resilience.
Our 8-week course offers an opportunity for you to learn about mindfulness, introduces you to a range of key practices and allows you to discover how it can be applied informally in day to day life. We will explore the power of mindfulness in responding to stress – giving you choices about how to respond skilfully to difficult thoughts, feelings and situations, rather than simply 'reacting' to them.
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is about becoming fully aware of the moment – the sights, sounds, thoughts, feelings and body sensations that are there to be noticed and the ways in which we relate to ourselves and others. This noticing is done with an open and non-judgemental attitude. It is a natural and simple state and yet is something that we very often lose touch with – becoming caught up in our thoughts and feelings and wanting things to be different from how they actually are.
Our lives are often so busy and full, that we have a vague sense that life may be passing us by without us making the best of it. By practicing mindfulness and becoming aware of what is actually here, moment by moment, not only can we nurture an attitude of openness and learn to respond skilfully to what is happening in our lives but life can seem to become more vivid and colourful and we have an increased awareness of 'what really matters'.
The Groups
The groups welcome everyone: you may be struggling with stress and anxiety and wish to learn skills to respond to these difficulties, or perhaps you have heard about the wide range of benefits that practicing mindfulness can bring and would like to learn this life skill. Perhaps you have practiced mindfulness before but would like to come together to renew your practice as part of a group.
The groups are held once a week for two hours with an additional one day retreat. They are warm and welcoming and respectful of the differences that we bring. Sessions are a combination of group discussion and practices including sitting meditations, body scans, three-step breathing space and mindful movement.
The location and time can vary. Please contact me for more information about up-coming groups.
Individual Lessons
If you would prefer to learn mindfulness on an individual or small group basis, please contact me to discuss these options.
